The first entry on our list of upcoming video game remakes is Like a Dragon: Ishin!, a remake of the Yakuza RPG set during the Late Edo Period in Japan.

In it, we follow Sakamoto Ryōma as he navigates the uncertainties of society while tracking down the murderer of his mentor.

Shrouded in a secret identity, Ryōma takes to the streets of Kyoto in search of answers and vengeance.

The remake is set to include many familiar systems as Yakuza 5, including Climax Heat alongside new hand-to-hand, sword, and pistol fighting techniques.

Capcom is set to continue its trend of remaking classic Resident Evil games by revisiting the fourth mainline entry in the iconic survival horror franchise.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is due out on PC and consoles in spring 2021 and will bring revitalized action to the beloved zombie game.

This includes reimagining the storyline which centers on Leon Kennedy along with implementing a host of graphical and gameplay improvements.

It’s reported that many team members from the well-received Resident Evil 2 Remake are involved with the project so here’s to hoping it’s just as good.

When the original System Shock was released in 1994, critics praised the game’s relatively realistic physics and the scale of its 3D environments.

Today, the series is remembered for elevating the first-person genre even though its success was short-lived.

Fortunately, developer Night Dive Studios is looking to bring the original back to life with a backer-funded remake currently in the works.

The remake will yet again see us controlling a resourceful hacker as they explore a space station brimming with terrifying creatures and a hostile AI named SHODAN.

Despite being one of the more revered Nintendo franchises, there hasn’t been a new Advance Wars game in over a decade.

Thankfully, that’s about to change when Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp releases on the Switch later this year.

Touted as a comprehensive remake of the first two games in the series: Advance Wars and AW2: Black Hole Rising, it features updated graphics and refined gameplay.

In it, players will lead the Orange Star Army into battle while leveraging land, air, and naval units in order to capture towns and take down enemy squads.

To celebrate the popular action platformer’s 10-year anniversary, developer Hopoo Games is remaking the original Risk of Rain.

Dubbed Risk of Rain Returns, this remake includes HD graphics, new survivors, updated multiplayer, and new music.

Additionally, this version of the game will carry over many of Risk of Rain 2’s improvements for more streamlined gameplay.

Still no word on an official release date but expect that to change in the coming months.

Layers of Fear and The Medium developer Bloober Team is set to revive one of best entries in the iconic survival horror series Silent Hill.

Currently in production, Silent Hill 2 Remake will modernize the classic title for PC and PlayStation platforms, with an Xbox version shortly after.

Word on the street is that the game will feature improved combat, environments, and a much older James Sunderland.

Considering Konami is reportedly working on getting a slew of remakes out the door, it may be a while before we get an official release date.

The next contender on our list of the best upcoming video game remakes is Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which is slated for a 2023 launch.

Positioned as the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy, Rebirth will continue after the divisive ending of the first game in a new, parallel timeline.

It’s rumored Square plans on taking the trilogy’s story in a completely different direction compared to the original FFVII.

This includes suggestions that Sephiroth may become an ally to your party and previously dead characters possibly returning.

The original SWKOTR is fondly remembered as one of the most groundbreaking video game releases for its incredible scope, immersive gameplay, and epic narrative.

The ability to travel to multiple planets, meet a wide range of diverse characters, and encounter larger-than-life foes made for an incredible experience.

With an upcoming remake in the pipeline by Aspyr Media, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Ent., we can’t wait to see how the classic holds up after all this time.

Like many other upcoming video game remakes, players can KOTOR to include plenty of improvements as it’s being rebuilt using the latest tech.

The cult 1995 first-person shooter Rise of the Triad will make a comeback in an upcoming video game remaster currently in development by 3D Realms.

Far from the first retro FPS to receive a refresh, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition will be the first entry in the franchise available on modern consoles.

It’s set to feature widescreen support, mouselook support, revamped multiplayer, and a classic mode that lets players stick to the original’s look.

Even though Triad fans would probably prefer a new entry, this is good news for anyone who’s been waiting for a more accessible way to play the original.

It’s been nearly a decade since Ubisoft released a new entry in the Prince of Persia series, with the last game being 2010’s The Forgotten Sands.

That’s all set to change after the company revealed an upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is currently underway.

The game follows a Prince who finds himself entangled in a feud between his father and a corrupt adversary.

At the center of the story is a powerful artifact known as the Dagger of Time, which grants the user the ability to control time.

The Fear Effect games had their run during the early 2000s on PS1 and are mostly remembered for their cel-shaded art and clumsy controls.

Following the release of a standalone spin-off, developer Kronos Digital is looking to capitalize on the series’ resurgence with Fear Effect Reinvented.

It sees players controlling three mercenaries tasked with rescuing the daughter of one of Hong Kong’s biggest criminal leaders.

In addition to updating the original’s graphics, Reinvented will introduce gameplay modifications tailored for today’s players while staying faithful to the story.

Following THQ Nordic’s acquisition of Piranha Bytes back in May 2019, the company has begun working on a remake of the classic 2001 action RPG Gothic.

For the upcoming remake, THQ Nordic appears to be leaving the story alone, instead focusing on updating the game’s visuals and combat.

In it, you play as a prisoner of a mining colony who receives a letter requesting him to seek out a group of wizards knowns as the Order of the Magicians of Fire.

If you would like to check out the game for yourself, THQ has released a free playable teaser you can download through Steam.

Our next pick for the best upcoming video game remakes is a remake of the 1999 PC FPS Kingpin: Life of Crime.

Described as an “enhanced re-release,” Kingpin: Reloaded revisits the Quake II engine classic with support for up to 4K resolutions and adjustable graphics.

Additional characteristics include controller support, new quest and dialogue systems, and more.

The story remains largely unchanged and sees you leading a street gang as you set out to exact revenge on your enemies and dethrone the Kingpin.

Technically a remaster, Braid Anniversary Edition will soon be the definitive way to play Jonathan Blow’s original masterpiece.

In it, you control a man named Tim as he attempts to rescue a princess from an evil monster using time manipulation.

The game was meant to be a critique of contemporary trends in video games but ended up being a solid puzzle platformer in its own right.

The rerelease will feature remastered artwork, animations, and music that will look and sound better on high-resolution displays.

Square Enix has announced they’re currently working on bringing the classic RPG Dragon Quest III to modern standards with an upcoming HD-2D Remake.

This is just in time for the franchise’s 35th anniversary and is planned to have a simultaneous global release without any localization delays.

The most notable difference is a shift to a bird’s eye view camera and modified 2.5D visuals reminiscent of games like Octopath Traveller and Project Triangle Strategy.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will also feature fully 3D environments and updated animations for its pixel art character sprites.

Currently in the early stages of production at Ubisoft Toronto, a remake of the original Splinter Cell is expected to release sometime in the future.

Leveraging “new-generation visuals and gameplay, and the dynamic lighting and shadows the series is known for,” the remake will follow the same story as the original.

Gameplay will follow suit while “redefining what stealth action is going to feel like for a modern audience,” with respect to Fisher’s gadgets, tactics, and weapons.

We encourage you to check back for updates following any new Splinter Cell announcements from Ubisoft in the future.
